The Story Your Brand Is Afraid to Tell

A Brand Story Intensive for Founders, Entrepreneurs, and Creative Professionals Who Are Done Hiding Behind Their Product

Every week on this site, we decode the storytelling genius behind great films.

We find the narrative intelligence in Nordic noir. We trace the Heroine’s Journey through historical drama. We show how the greatest directors — Scorsese, Fincher, Woo, Fellini — do one thing consistently and brilliantly that separates their work from everything that surrounds it:

They tell the true story. Not the safe one.

Ben-Hur is not a story about chariot racing. It is a story about a man who chose the story of hatred over the story of forgiveness — and what that choice cost him across decades. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is not a story about a man who ages in reverse. It is a story about learning, with great tenderness and great difficulty, to accept the irreversibility of time. Man on Fire is not a story about a bodyguard seeking revenge. It is a story about a man searching, through extreme violence, for the story that would make his existence feel justified.

The most powerful stories are never really about what they appear to be about. They are about the human truth underneath.

The most powerful brand stories work exactly the same way.

After ten years of studying how stories shape organisations — and after working with founders, leadership teams, and creative professionals across four continents — Peter de Kuster has observed something that repeats itself with remarkable consistency:

Most brands tell the safe story.

The founding myth that sounds like every other founding myth. The mission statement that could belong to any company in the sector. The About page that describes what the company does without ever revealing why the founder cannot stop doing it. The LinkedIn posts that perform enthusiasm without ever risking the truth.

And then there are the rare brands — the ones you cannot stop thinking about, the ones that feel inexplicably alive — that tell the true story. The one with the actual risk in it. The one that required genuine courage to write. The one that makes you feel, before you have ever met these people, that you already know something real about them.

The difference between those two kinds of brand is not a better copywriter. It is not a more sophisticated brand strategy. It is the willingness to excavate the real story — the one that happened before the official version began — and the skill to shape it into something that other people can receive.

That is what this Intensive does.

What is a Brand Story Intensive?

A Brand Story Intensive is a single focused working day — conducted online or at your location — in which Peter de Kuster works directly with a founder or leadership team to excavate, shape, and articulate the brand’s One Great Story.

This is not a branding workshop. It is not a messaging exercise. It is not a day of Post-it notes and brand pyramid frameworks. It is a biographical investigation — rigorous, sometimes uncomfortable, consistently illuminating — into what your company is truly about, guided by the same storytelling intelligence Peter brings to the analysis of the world’s greatest films.

The day has three movements:

The Archaeology — Morning

Where did this company actually begin? Not in the official story. Not in the founding date on the website. But in the real beginning — the moment before the moment. The conversation that nobody else was present for. The failure that made the eventual success possible. The thing the founder promised themselves — or someone else — that nobody outside the company knows about.

Peter asks questions that brand strategists do not typically ask, because they are trained to work with what the company has decided to present rather than with what the company actually is. This session surfaces the real origin story: the one with cost, with doubt, with genuine human stakes.

The Architecture — Afternoon

Using the seven basic plots and the twelve archetypes as analytical tools — the same frameworks Peter uses to decode great films — he maps the structure of your brand story and identifies the one narrative thread that is both genuinely true and genuinely unforgettable.

Not a tagline. Not a positioning statement. The structural story: the protagonist, the call to adventure, the obstacle, the transformation, and the purpose that the transformation revealed. The story that, once told, makes everything else your brand says and does make sense.

The Articulation — Closing

You leave the day with a Brand Story Brief: a three-page written document, prepared by Peter, that captures your company’s real origin, its central conflict, its transformation, and its purpose — in language that is true, that is specific, and that can be used immediately across every touchpoint your brand touches. Website. Keynote. Investor pitch. Team onboarding. Press. Client proposals. Job listings.

Not a brand bible that sits in a folder. A living document that changes the way your organisation talks about itself.

What you receive:

A full day of one-on-one or small team work with Peter — online or on-site.

The Brand Story Brief: three pages, delivered within one week of the session.

A 60-minute follow-up call two weeks after delivery, to discuss how the story is landing and where it needs further refinement.

Who this is for:

Founders who have built something genuinely extraordinary but whose story about it still sounds, to their quiet frustration, like everyone else’s story about everything else.

Scale-ups preparing for a funding round, a market expansion, or a significant public moment — who know that the story they are currently telling is not the one that will close the room.

Creative agencies, design studios, consultancies, and professional service firms whose work is exceptional and whose story remains, despite their best efforts, invisible.

Leaders who know — in the way that people who have built something real always know — that the official story their organisation tells about itself is not the true one.

Investment: € 4.500 for the full day. Online, or on-site in Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Barcelona, Eindhoven or Florence. Or at your location. Travel costs for on-site sessions are additional and agreed in advance. Includes the Brand Story Brief document and the 60-minute follow-up call.

Your brand has one great story. The question is not whether it exists. The question is whether you have the courage — and the right guide — to tell it.
